Um, Sir, You're Doing Electability Wrong

On primary election night, before Senate re

sults in Michigan came in, my friend Samuel Minter and I were talking on the podcast live.

Obviously, we spoke about the political discourse out there about whether Haley Stevens or Abdul El-Sayed is more electable.

Now, I don’t have a dog in this fight. I live in a vastly different community, let alone state, and from my perspective, and because the race was close and the discussions were productive, both candidates are great, albeit different, representatives, of their state and voters.

But El-Sayed needed to win.

Contrary to what some have said, and not for the reasons his supporters would claim and the current data, El-Seyed is more electable in my opinion. That certainly doesn’t mean he’ll win. Just like a Stevens primary win would not be a guaranteed general win for her either.

But Stevens, and her supporters, know that at the end of the day, coming together and getting behind the candidate who made it through the primary, is now their best hope for helping defeat facism, and winning back the Senate.

It is the right course of action based on those goals and I commend them for it.

I also believe he’s more electable because I can see that many El-Sayed voters don’t give a shit about those goals. If they didn’t get their way, many of the votes Stevens would lose would be from them.

And I disagree that if El-Sayed won, Dems would lose more moderate Rs. I frankly don't think there are enough of them to make a difference.

These points so far have been proven here in Washington State with Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (MPG). Or Marie Perez, according to her new ads.

MPG’s opponent is most certainly no El-Sayed, no AOC, no Bernie Sanders, and no Mamdani. Anyone who has met him in person and had a conversation with him can tell you that. That’s a big fat no from me. He would never have won here. And anyone who has traveled this state can sure as hell glean that he's is not electable anywhere outside some precincts in Vancouver, WA.

But when the results here went another way, in favor of the “moderate” MPG, unlike Stevens supporters, Hennrich supporters vowed not to vote for her. I even saw someone working to elect Democrats in a heavily red district in my area, say they are going to donate to the Republican candidate because MPG won.

This segment of folks may seriously succeed in contributing to the Democrats losing the 3rd CD.

And well, maybe that’s fair since our state is slightly less than 60% Blue, and WA Dems currently hold 8 of 10 seats in Congress (80%). Good job everyone, by the way!

MPG will also not be running against an outwardly psychotic Trump-Republican this time around, so she’s unlikely to win enough anti-T voters.

But this was the problem MPG and her team have had all along.

Leading up to this, she decided to make stupid and dangerous votes…

* She voted for a $1.15 trillion annual defense policy bill over the objections of most House Democrats;

* Voted for DHS and ICE funding bills;

* Initially voted for the Voter Eligibility or SAVE Act… which she later voted against because… it’s horrible;

* Voted against children’s rights and right into fascist- Republican arguments;

* And spent time trying to censure her own party for… involvement in choosing their successor?! Rather than spending any time going after the proven criminals, committing all types of crimes on the other side of the aisle…and in the White House and Supreme Court.

And her team calls this: “playing chess, instead of checkers…”

Oh, honey, this is actually a three-dimensional chess set.

Republicans are never going to like you. It doesn’t matter if you succumb to some bad votes that you think make you look good on fighting crime, support the military and first-responders, appease toxic parents who want to control their children, or give into their propaganda of voter fraud.

The only people paying attention to those votes are crazy, far-right, likely AI trolls, and also… your fucking base, who are appalled by those choices.

The average voter, who is not spending time on their vacations writing up their thoughts on this, vote on vibes, and when you do shit like this, the vibes look really bad for everyone. Republicans can see right through it, and Democrats feel duped.

So, yeah… I think it’s stupid that Hennrich and his supporters aren’t supporting MPG, but what I think is worse, is that she and her team made decisions on difficult votes based on the ridiculous idea that those votes would appease, or even win over, the people who were going to vote against her regardless. And all while this team knew they were going to be running against an “acceptable” Republican in the general.

Unfortunately, in a race like this, you’re not just playing chess in Wahkiakum, Skamania, Pacific, Thurston, and Lewis Counties; you’re playing it in Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish, and all the other places in Washington where your money, and broad Democratic support, and influence comes from.

And some of those folks aren’t having it, because you are inflicting harm on them and their families for moonshot support from people who don’t like you. And the fact is, some of your base would rather have a Republican who they can expect shitty votes from, than a Democrat who won’t step up for them when it matters.

If I lived in the 3rd Congressional District, I would vote for MPG, PERIOD, but I’ll continue to drag the shit out of her when she does stuff like this. And the only person she has to blame if she does lose, is her own campaign.

Because, girl… I watch your posts, I’ve heard you at events. You're a great candidate and wonderful person to represent your district, but for the love of god, stop trusting in the folks who advise you to sell out others when YOU are in a place of leadership.

As my buddy Sam so aptly stated, it’s not a Moderate, Liberal or Democratic Socialist people are looking for, they are looking for fighters. They are looking for leaders who are ready to go to bat for them for the right reasons.
